Watch out Big Island, here come the Kenneys

Our day started nice and early as I picked Heidi up from work at 3:00 a.m and our alarm went off at 7:00 a.m. to head to the airport.  We picked up McDonalds for breakfast and they had a SPAM and eggs special!  We settled with our usual.  When we got to the airport, we returned our death trap rental car.  The Chevy Sonic may have had good gas mileage but H1 highway was not the place to drive it!

The flight was uneventful and soon we had arrived to Kona, HI.  We jumped in our Dodge Charger, a car I quickly enjoyed, and headed down the west coast.

Our first stop was the Black Sand beach.  The sand was surprisingly soft and clean.  It wiped right off our feet.  The turtles were sunbathing while we were there which made for some great photography.

We then headed to Volcano National Park.  Unfortunately it was a cold, windy, and rainy day up in the volcano.  We saw steam vents, when the water flows deep into the ground and turns into steam when it contacts hot rocks below.  We also saw the Halema'uma'u Crater which was emitting a gas and steam plume that we could see from the Jagger museum.  We then went down into a lava tube.

After our time at the park we checked into the Lotus Cottage Bed and Breakfast.  It is about 8 minutes from the park.  Our room was very nice.  For dinner, I had my first taste of rabbit.  I'm not sure if it was the curry flavor or the rabbit itself but I was not a huge fan.  The rest of the dinner was delicious.

To top off an awesome day we headed back to Volcano National Park and viewed Halema'uma'u Crater at night.  It had an orange glow.  We were astounded at the beauty.

It was then off to bed since tomorrow we will hike into a crater and traverse the island on the way to The Hapuna Prince Hotel.
